Anything else just seriously damages the immersion, one of the key features of RPG feeling.
And any guidance features ruin it for the "Explorer" type of player.

I would only consider use of thingies like a quest compass when picking up a game again previously abandoned for a longer period of time.
Then it comes in handy... for a brief re-orientation phase, that´d be!


So i hope the Larians had a change of mind (or even planned it from the start, just didn´t want to miss the fun to stir us up by leaving us in the dark about it badsmile )
... and made these "dirty little helpers" at least optional.
