The latest Server Down Show, currently available at GameStar.de , features Petra Schmitz who talks about her experiences with Divinity II: Ego Draconis. The little German we understand tells us that she likes the game a lot and especially enjoyed the many side-quests the game features. There's also some new footage of the game to be seen. Have a look for yourselves, and let us know if we interpreted it correctly in our German forums or here wink

Well, yes, she likes the game a lot and it's even said that Divinity 2 will become a "top game" in the next printed version of GameStar magazine (whatever that exactly means, I'm no customer of this magazine).

The positive aspects are the overall story, the audio, the game world, the dialogues and the side quests. They all seem to be of impressive quality.
It is said that the graphics are okay, but nothing extraordinary. They especially express concerns about the quality of some animations in the game.

Then there are some other interesting points: While you can select a voice for your character, there will be no audio for your character in the dialogues, but there will be some comments in game. I think it will be like in DivDiv, that your hero mentions some things about his/her environment or gives some feedback of his/her condition.
Another point mentioned is that the overall playing time will be quite long, around 30 - 40h and counting if you go for some extensive exploring.

Yes, and you'll gain the dragon shape only around level 18.

Last but not least, another "negative" (depends on your point of view, I think) point mentioned is that while you gain achievements on the PC this has absolutely no consequences whatsoever.

one important point that was raised as well was that she said that you can not attack normal ground targets when you're a dragon. she said they sort of disappear from the game. the two dudes didn't like that aspect at all. i dont think i like that either. but again, im sure it won't lessen my enjoyment of the game. as stated above, apparently the game is going to be "top rated" in the next issue. so i guess i will keep my preorder.

she says she really likes the aspect that there is so much to do and discover around every corner. she said she could tell the developers put a lot of love into making this game.

very important she said it runs very well on a not so great pc and players shouldnt worry about performance.
only complaint she had was that the animations were somewhat weak and it had some "häßliche ecken" which word for word translates to "ugly corners" which i would just translate to "its ugly here and there". but no big deal.

at the beginning of the interview they are arguing about what "ego draconis" means and i wish i could have pointed them to the stickied topic about it here on teh forums hehehhe

I really hope not. That's just silly. I want to be able to burn people on the ground. If I want to do only aerial combat, i'd buy Ace Combat.

I think its a balancing issue. You are too strong as a dragon, the game would simply be too easy if you can just change into a dragon and kill everyone from above.

That's spot on - the major reason was balancing, but that doesn't mean there aren't fights were you can't use your dragon against ground targets. It's just no the general rule. The game mechanic is that the npcs seek shelter whenever the player turns into a dragon, which frankly is what I'd do also wink

Which on the other hand sheds light on those who want people to stay on the open fields meanwhile dragons attacking.

That they didn't come up with the thought that they might look for some shelter speaks volumes about them - and their way of thinking.

im not sure i understand what you're trying to say. who is "they"? the point of the people who complain about this is that it would be MORE FUN to swoop down on a group of 50 knights and decimate them. thats what games are about right? anyway who is to say they cant have superheroes like siegfried who killed a dragon singlehandedly.
again, i dont mind it too much, the interview just reaffirmed my belief that i should keep the preorder after she said the game runs fine. but i do think it'd be more fun to have dragon ground combat as well.

That's a little shallow, actually. Sure, when you're in the air spewing fireballs, I would think people would run and hide...in real life. It's nice they thought about that for AI purposes. But wanting to have the oppurtunity to use some dragon skills on enemies probably comes to mind first when thinking about playing the game. Say a band of orcs or what have you is simply owning you...assume dragon-shape and blow them away. That's one scenario I picture in my mind.

And I'm not so sure I disagree with Silencer. I'm starting to have mixed emotions about this whole thing. Granted, the thought of playing as a dragon at first was like, "awesome, bad-ass, can't wait". But I'm more of the traditional fantasy-hero guy. Seems less hero-ish if even-ing the playing field by turning into a dragon is the only way to accomplish things. Lar speaks about balance, and I'm sure they have put a lot of thought and effort into it, but hopefully taking dragon shape is more than a novelty, but not overdone either. And I certainly don't want it to be difficult to control flight combat compared to human-form ground combat.

In fact it depends on the situation. If I am attacking villagers or goblins, I would expect them to flee, as Lar said.
But if I try to burn a full party of long bow archers, I expect them to fight back !

I hope this can be done, I'd really want to blow things up haha :p

Anyway, Shea was worried about the epic side of being a dragon and killing everything if something is annoying us. I guess this can be solved by gameplay mechanics, like a mage that could force you to turn into human shape by using a spell, something like that.
This is entirely possible to balance the dragon. Look at Drakan. The dragon was powerful, but not overpowered. And there were plenty of dungeons and caves where he couldn't go.

But I think it's already too late frown

No. I wouldn't just blow them away. That's too much powergaming for my taste, it wouldn't be any challenge at all. It would be just like "I RULEZ !" kind of bloated ego experience.


No, it's just a question of how you define the game. Do you want NPCs standing still around to give you a shallow sense of superiority, because they just didn't move when you attacked them,

or do you rather want a breathing, living world ? Kind of a simiulation, maybe ?


Me, I personally prefer a world, a simulation that lewt's me feel immersed, because it appears to breathe life. It has actually the words "life" glued on it.
In it, I just want to act the NPCs so that I have the feeling as if I'm within ( ! ) a true, living world - with all of its challenges.

I don't want a shallow feeling of sheer superiority like any uncreative powergamer. I want to experience ! I want to see, I want to experience progress !

I want to have the feeling as if this game is something that makes me wonder ... The "sense of wonder" kind of feeling ...

To me, it's just a definition of how you play any role-playing game.

If I want the feeling of superiority, then I can play any Action-RPG. It's nothing but this.

But me, I want to dive into the game, I want to be part of it, I want to have the feeling of an simulation around me, almost like in an good MMORPG (at least how it should be).

The game is one week away from release in Germany. Including the actual pressing of the DVDs and the distribution my guess is it already left the building. So I think you thought correctly smile

Maybe I should have said...That's a little shallow, your view of other people.

I totally get the way you would want to play though, and can't say it's a bad way to want to go about things. I wish more games could be so totally engrossing, and very much hope this one is.

Not a problem for me in regards to not being able to attack enemies on the ground while in dragon form....that is what human form is for. I think the ability to switch from air combat to ground specifically only adds to the overall variety of the game, regardless. So, complaining about not being able to scorch enemies on the ground is a minor one I think, when put into the broader perspective of being able to have the abilty to become a dragon in the first place. How many other RPG's off such variety to begin with? I'll take it as it is, thanks. The game sounds fantastic to me.
