Disabling desktop composition fixed problems with crashing and graphics not showing up at certain resolutions. I have also fixed problems in other games by disabling desktop composition.
PS. Setting it to run as administrator caused missing options in resolution choices (everything above 1280x768) and missing choices in the character creation to show up when it wasn't before.
