They should allow you to let your gem runner quest for malachite gems, but increase the chance he comes back injured. That would allow for it being exceedingly rare.

malachite ORE and malachite GEMS are completely unrelated treasure items. The game suggests gem cutters can polish one into the other but it is BS... They are just completely unique items with no connection whatsoever.
You are virtually guarenteed two malachite gems from doing some quests I wouldn't spoil. There are 15 of them total in the game (the other 13 you sell for lots of money if you get them)

axely bud 4 gems are via quests, u can get four from the deamon quest in the troll villige via mindreading

you can get malachite if you do the Zagan demon Q in High hall, you wil have to read the mind of the Q giver though!
