Richard won't take hearts from goblins that are heavy smokers and drinkers. Half of them smoke about 2 packs a day and/or drink one or three six packs of beer. Then there is about 25% of them that are just cold HEARTLESS savages that want to eat your liver! The last 25% have hearts and you obtain them provided an arrow doesn't go threw 'em, they are not fried by a spell or you don't stab your sword threw them while you murder the goblin.
