The exploits I was referring to 'above' were at least letting walking armours build up to block the regeneration chambers, or stand in or in front of one, to force the general to head to the far one (only effective in the original release of D2:ED). I didn't re-read the older posts in this topic, just skimmed through and noticed I had mentioned those previously.

And I'm back here again too, having not gone back to finish off Zagan. As much as I love most of ED there are too many pointlessly frustrating battles, and this is one of the worst; this time not for dying constantly but just being interminable. I've turned off my games PC and might go back to it tomorrow, but this isn't fun.

Some of the other fortresses aren't as tough - especially if you try to avoid fights and get inside - I have learned just to skip this one.

I'm probably also at too low a level: that's usually the problem in all things Divinity! Trouble is I have a slight levelling deficit so needed to go and do something, so armed with my new bow which I have childishly called The Pwn as it currently deals about 500 damage (probably not much compared to stuff other people have possessed, but pretty serious business for me; it's the Bow of Orobas with one of those expensive added damage enchantments that requires a malachite gem) I found I could often slay the approaching hordes before they got close and may have become slightly over-confident...

Plus yesterday wasn't such a good day IRL so I was quite moody.

With a bow, Way of the Ranger turns a close range Splitting Arrows into a die button for most opponents, and it will do serious damage to a boss (not to mention extending its effective range and helping with groups). The key to this fight in DKS / D2:DC is to quickly hit both levers to disable the regeneration chambers, then focus on the general before the walking armours can get in the way too much. I basically went left to get that lever, with my creature acting as a distraction in the middle, then across to get the second, turned and fired an explosive arrow at the general, jumped over a walking armour and finished him off with splitting arrows (possibly with another normal attack required; I reloaded and repeated this fight a couple more times, after the D2:ED strategy was ineffective; I didn't even use the levers there, or specifically do anything to block access to the closest regeneration chamber).

Thanks, I may give that approach a try. At least when I have my wits about me which is a fairly narrow window of opportunity!

The other thing that I'm still trying to remember to do without much success but which can make all the difference is to make use of the tactical pause button to ensure I'm using the right attack (this is important as I am not a good aim with the keyboard!) and which would also make the target selection more feasible and useful.

Yes, that does make things easier. Actually, I found the pause function on Xbox to be much more useful than PC. Specifically, locking on to targets (using right stick to cycle through) and using an attack skill to come out of pause was quick and easy; on PC you can not cycle through target selection when paused, IIRC, and you have to manually click on a target to use an attack skill. It's been a while since I've played, though, and never did do a complete playthrough on PC.

I'm pleased to report I didn't need to resort to tactics much and it was as I suspected, trying too much at too low a level. I came back at level 34 (I think), summoned my creature, thumped Raze, pulled the lever on the nearest chamber, whirlwind attack (dual-wielding, combined damage about 800, plus whatever multiplier I got for the attack type) at which point he tried to run away so I charged at him and he died, rather more quickly than I expected. Creature was disappoint as he didn't have time to finish urinating before it was all over.
