When you did this : untill I remove the files with the options from the Application Data folders - after some tweaking I finally found "safe" options that the game accepts). You probably hosed the game.
Save your saved games somewhere.
Uninstall the game.
Re-install and then copy your save games back over.
Did you have the resolution problem for widescreen monitors or some other issue before?
