I can confirm that the ore veins are random.
I quicksaved at the entrance of the Depleted Mines. At the end of the corridor on the bottom-most floor, there is a malachite ore vein. I got 0 to 1 Malachite Gems for 5-6 tries, and in the next one, I got 3!
My eyes are glittering with lust for loot, and my mouth drools.
I could not find the second ore vein in the Patriarch cave, though. The one I could find is just by Patriarch. Anybody care to share?

There is Malachite Deposits in the cave at the end of Grave Robbers and each Deposit contains a Malachite Gem.

The ones in Patriarch cave are just before you meet him, right before the wooden walkway. I had two veins, not sure if it's random or not. One on the right hand side next to a wooden mine brace was easy to see and only had one gem. The other is tucked away in a little pocket area on the left back behind that wagon I believe it was and had two malachite gems. It's hard to see you need to be virtually on top of it as it's down in a little pocket in the rocks.

All ores veins is random. So you can end up without even 1 gem from the veins, and its has already been tested and proven.
Slyvannas: The lever is use to operate an elevator if I recall correctly.

I think they made mistake to make them limited like this, atleast they could have made them random sales at any npc. Like randomly poping up in stores when you shop, that way you can atleast enchant all your stuff with lv 10 enchantments when you need it.

Level 9 enchantments are not that much worse than level 10. The Level 9 Increased Damage enchantment adds 24 damage, the level 10 one adds 27. It's not a lot.
So the only enchants where Malachite Gems are important are the Healing Aura ones, which always require one gem at any level.

I currently have 24. I have not handed in the two for the quest yet. I used the save/load on each malachite vein until I got three gems which never took too long. I did spend twenty minutes on one vein trying to get the mythical four drop but it never happened. http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/1340/divinity220100124085732.jpgI try reloading at the patriarch vein and get the same 6 ore and ! aquamarine gem everytime. I found that with one vein too. I *think* the veins set their contents when you get within a certain distance of them. I always saved about 15-20 steps away.

You dont actually need too much malachite gems, unless you want to spam it unnecessarily. I only had around 10 to 12 during my 1st run through and its quite enough for my usage. My dual wield requires 4 for rank 10 enchantment, and what left are all use on accessories for rank 10 healing aura. For armors, rank 9 protection and rank 10 only differs by 1, which is 10 and 11. Basically you wont need rank 10 on unless you has extra. I didnt even do any reload for it during my first run through since I not aware it will pop malachite gems till very end, where I accidentally get a few through the veins only.
Not including veins, you can get 3 through broken valley, 1 through charlie, 1 through merchant on the road, 4 through high hall quests. If you choose radclief, you can get 2 more extras. That what you can roughly get without veins.

Yea not sure why everyone in the walkthroughs is saying save them or use them wisely. There are plenty of them around. Just earlier I got 5 of them out of the tomb with the grave robbers quest. 3 out of the vein on the right and 2 out of the vein on the left. I'm carrying around 13 right now and not sure how many I have in my battle tower chest. Think I only used one or to for enchantments so far. The enchantments the Malachite gems are used for are not very good or useful ones the way I see it.

Hmm did not notice any, know there is a couple small areas where you have to jump over lava via the walls to get to the area. I'll go back and look around as I'm near that area now I think. Think there may have been some of the veins that give out poison enchanting gems but not sure as I really don't remember much about that area. I know it was not a very big area.
Maybe the vein shows up if you don't mindread Beatrice. Sort of a possible win win situation as the vein could be empty or contain gems.
I'll head in there and look around.

Who does not acknowledge you brought them back? What quest? Those particular gems are not associated with any quest that I know of.

Hmm as to the blind guy, not sure as I never got the quest from him. I had 2 Malachite gems on me and then just gave them to him during the first dialog I had with him. Never even knew he gave a specific quest for it. Can't say, all I know is I had like 5 minutes of dialog it seemed with him before he even mentioned being able to see if he had 2 of those gems for eyes.
As to the demon are two demons in there, one you fight after fixing the elevator lever and going down another level and then one you fight further on in the lava cave. Did you fix the elevator with the lever found in a chest, you need that to get down another level.
