I finish act I and i just got the second battlefield key in ACT II and so far i have been collecting all the ruby, emerald, crystals and mini-um so on and so forth. Is there any purpose of those items beside NPC food (selling them to merchants). Also what the purpose of the bag of gem from ACT I right after the first battle field key?

Regular gems are only useful for selling/trading with. There are a couple special gem types (in act 4), but it should be obvious from the context that they are different (and I'm pretty sure you can not sell them).

The crystal bag holds crystals, which give you a resistance boost (when put in the bag). You can mix and match crystals to give you a higher resistance against the type of damage creatures do in the area you are in, or just load the bag up with the largest crystals you have.

After you open the crystal bag, move the window (if required) so that is is not over the inventory window (if you are playing at a low resolution, you can move the inventory window partly off screen to make enough room). Then you can drag and drop crystals back and forth between the inventory and crystal bag. If the crystal bag window is in front of the inventory window, clicking on a crystal in the inventory brings that window to the front, so you can no longer see/access the crystal bag window.

Having trouble with alchemy.

SPOILER: Alchemy - create/combine potions - screenshot links are broken, though, and some information was updated as patches made changes.

There is also an Alchemy section in the appendixes of the Beyond Divinity Strategy Guide.
