The latest
patch disables saving when you are dead. Otherwise you can go into the options and change the hot keys, so they are not as easy to get mixed up.
I took some damage getting to the mage, but once I started hitting him (with Stun) the rest of the fight wasn't too difficult. You can drink a shadow potion and use your spin attack near, but not directly on, him without becoming visible.
