The best way is to play part-way through the game as a warrior, archer, and mage. See if you like one play-style over the others. As a general rule(to me anyway) the warrior gives an even level of difficulty, not too easy and not too hard throughout the game. The archer starts out easy/strong but becomes more difficult to play as a pure one as you progress(until you get explosive arrow, but then it gets boring because you use nothing but that). The mage starts out weak/hard to play as, until you gain more spells and enough mana to cast limitless amounts of spells, then it becomes very powerful.
You could also do what I'm doing and play a hybrid. The main skills I'm using include sword and shield, magic blast, fire wall and exploding arrow. I also put one point in whirlwind, rush attack, Thousand Strikes, mana leech, destruction(as bonus point), ranger stealth(3), summon demon(2) and summon mastery(laiken's sword). Mana Efficiency is also maxed and has a bonus point. For stats I only put extra points in vitality and spirit. Put two points in strength and one in the other two until strength hit 40(at level 20), now I'm putting two points in dexterity and 1 in the others. My health is in the mid 300's and mana in the low 300's. My character has remained very strong throughout the game. Used summon undead in the first half to help as well as dragon-elf creature. Still using same creature class but changed to summon demon.
