I just got Divine Divinity today. I had seen a Starter Tips thread on the old mesage board while considering buying this game, at least I think it was an old message board, and went looking for it just now and the board is gone. Any chance of you old pros redoing a Starter Tips thread for new people please?

We are in bad luck, Aurora, the old Forum went down today - which questions do you have? Where are you? I'll help you, ok?
Kiya

Hope, the old info is accessable in a few days - Raze will post a new thread this night - but at the moment: Please ask, ok?

And welcome . If you wish, you can PM me, I'm online - even if invisible;)

I am currently compiling and editing a few of my old posts with starter tips, the last of my posts in the old forum to be updated for the new one. I've got some other stuff on the go also, but it will be posted today.

Get the patch 1.032 : 2 quicksave slots - and more if you change this. Patch link, click here, please

Save often and on different saves

If you can't click it drag&drop it into your inventory (my rule )

Brighten up your gamma - options menu - video - gamma, this helps in dungeons to find levers

Get the alchemy skill as soon as possible, lvl 1 allows you to mix red + blue potions = white (restoration), they're far more effective.
Alchemy spoiler, click here, please

Look for keys before using lockpicks (chests, doors), but in the dungeons = have a lookout for levers, they're shaped like a demon's head

[Linked Image]

Kill Jake twice

Don't refuse George his Drudanae plant and ASK Lanilor first before taking

Don't use the healing gem at once - you can heal both soldiers

Don't annoy Otho (kill pigs, break banner, steal Lanilor's plant)

Don't give Smiruk the Orc an unidentified axe, he takes all and you can have a hanging cutscene afterwards - you'll see why

Keep your Zombie helper away from the orcs, they're enemies - if you teleport yourself to the groundlvl, he will die - so try to shut him away in the dungeon before going/teleporting up

Solve all quests on ground lvl first, then enter the dungeons, enemies may be hard.

Dungeon
Get the tellie pyramids as soon as possible, by teleporting yourself to the 2nd, fight the skellies there, drag&drop tellie into your inventory and then teleport yourself back to where the other one is. Carry one tellie with you, place the other one in the abandoned house, if you're encumbered or bad in health, drop this tellie and teleport yourself back up = sleep, sell, identify or drop loot - teleport yourself back, pick your tellie up and proceed.

If you enter small sub-dungeons, SAVE first, those enemies in there are harder

In the last lvl, look at screenshot spoiler, touching ONE specific lever sets cutscene going - so loot everything first there. If the boss fight comes and you're weak: make a run for the exit, Mardaneus will rscue you with an energy arc - though you loose XP points for killing then

Aleroth dungeons spoiler, click here

Is there any way to replenish mana other than potions/food and resting? Some kind of mana regen spell perhaps? I was hoping to keep to spells with my Mage but it's going to be difficult if I'm always looking for potions.

Assuming I continue to play as mainly spellcaster, I will putting my points into Intelligence for more mana. How high should I take this though, and how much Strength, Agility, and Vitality will I need?

Mana: sleep or potions, no other way and food isn't practicable, a mage does not eat much = the best are restoration potions, did you notice the alchemy thread I added in the post above?

I'll tell you how I did it, ok?
Per lvl-up: 2 pts in int. the rest on the others = had far over 100
agility? depends on the weapon = for bows pretty high
armour depends on strength 60-70 at least

Look for items/weapons/armour boosting up stats and giving spells, you'll find them .
Kiya

Learn the enchant weapon skill = you can boost up stats via charms, do you know how? Enchanting weapons, warrior skill, click here
There are no class restrictions, just change your path in the abilities book, by clicking on the < > buttons, then choose the skill you wish and confirm.

and when you finish aleroth, take a good run AROUND Aleroth, the orcs you'll find there should be relatively easy but very good for exp. points.

Also try to get level 35 strength asap, this will enable you to start carrying better weapons with (a lot) more damage (for your level). It will make things so much easier, you can rebalance afterwards in other stats.

Oh and yes, try chicken meat, gives you mana, and normal meat from the rabbits hopping around, restore vitality (full life bar restoration in the beginning)
Get the teleport asap. You will get one of two, once you opened the gate to the catacombs. Go fetch the other teleport first by teleporting yourself to the other missing teleport. Be warned of multiple enemies upon arrival. Put one teleport near your bed, and one in your stash. When u run out of life or mana zap yourself to your bed to take a nap (this will give you full life/mana.
Your room is found in a basement of one of the houses in Aleroth (the house where you start the game). Feel free to decorate your room with plants, pots and especially gems; it's gives a beautifull glow and is a lot of fun to do.

Oh and yes, the zombie that helps you in the catacombs, get rid of it asap (by surfacing back in the village)
Why ? the enemies it kills do not add to Your Experience! which is pretty important when you start. Each Kill Matters!

My version says 1.02 something... Is there another previous patch I should be installing first before I do this one? I thought I saw some problems somebody else was having with this? Help?

Please, look again, Savalor: If you have the Engl. version, you should have 1.029. And I updated from 1.029 to 1.032 and had no problems (Win XP) - all my saves worked.

That's it. Thanks. And I'm running on XP (though I had changed it to 2000 because it was going really slow when there was too much traffic on the screen, and it seemed to help). I just didn't want to update and lose everything I'd done!
