I posted in a thread yesterday about a method that has worked ok for me, but I am starting to seriously rethink everything. I came across a huge group of bandits in the pass before Maxos tower ( I assume, haven't reached it yet) and picking them off one by one, usually by charming one, and ducking back to watch. Anyway, I spent almost three hours at that pass. I can dispose of the smaller group up front, but as soon as I go through the pass to target another, 3 or more lock on to me and I'm screwed. I can out run them to the point they won't chase me, but I go back in and start over. They are lvl 11, and I'm a 10, warrior with some magic missile and spirit.
Another area is down the river from here. I gave up on those guys, in hopes of finding some more goblins for some XP. I started over towards the bandit camp (on my map). I got to a little bridge, that swings east towards the camp and saw some more bandits before I crossed. Killed 5 of them no problem, but there was this bandit Sargent that kicked my ass. Multiple times. Bull rush, sledge hammer, some spell he spams from a distance that doesn't let me get in close, etc. So I jumped in the water so swim down stream to come up behind him.
Low and behold is another of those small temple ruins where the mage pops up, says some kooky isht and a monster pops up. This time a Lvl 9 demon of some sort. So I charm him, pop my ghost, and go get the sargent. I lure him back down and he lays waste to all of us. About 5 times. ONE FRICKIN GUY, ONE LEVEL ABOVE ME!!!!
Now here is the deal. I am not OCD, so I won't spend hours upon hours searching every square inch of terrain for mobs to kill for XP farming. I generally take what comes in natural progression. I TRY to talk to all of the NPC's and get their quests and complete them. If I come across a secret dungeon or cave, I'm in there. But I try to follow the main quest line when I play games, especially the first time around. This game, I'm pretty damn sure I have covered 95% of what is behind me. I haven't mind read but a few times, so I'm not way behind level wise, if at all. I have played games of this genre 100's of times, so I pretty much know how to build a toon. Maybe not the best build, first time out, but my god, it AIN"T FRICKIN ROCKET SCIENCE!
My point is this...I don't mind dying a few times from being stupid or ambushed or just not in the right mindset at the time. I LIKE a CHALLENGE. I normally PREACH TACTICS on forums to get guys to rethink a little when they complain about being stuck somewhere. But when a game is this unforgiving, this difficult, this...rediculously scaled in terms of character to opponent, especially damge wise, then it just takes much of the fun out of it. period.
I am at the point to where I have basically three options:
- Start over and seriously rethink my character, based on what I now know, thought I doubt much would change.
- Move difficulty down to easy...AIN'T a frickin option for me.
- Quit and put it on the shelf; I like too much about the game to do this.
- Ok a fourth option; go back and search under every stone for th 5% of mobs I missed, see if I can lvl a time or two more and come back, which leads me to my final point:
There is no way that a experienced player that has played so many of these types of games, playing the game on normal, SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PROGRESS THROUGHT THE MAIN STORY LINE, while completing an ample number of side quests to level up, AND HAVE THIS INSANE LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY MOVING THROUGH THE GAME. it never happened in the first Divinity, never in any Diablo, Sacred, Fallout, DA, ME...well, you get the point. It's just become PLAIN RIDICULOUS!!!
The MOBS need to be SCALED better, where 1 or 2 doesn't simply ruin your day!
