Are you playing as a warrior?
For warrior types especially the games is very hard until around level 20. Before that, it's not a good idea to try to melee mobs.
But as soon as one has invested some in skills like Life leech & regenerate, not to mention Bleed, things suddenly become much easier.
For rangers & mages it is much much easier with skills like Fireball & Magic missile.
