Kordoba posted a description of how to get back lost items, and helped fix a lot of broken quests. However, some people do not keep older saved games, and due to a bug, some items have just not been where they should be. This post is a list of inventory files, and a step-by-step procedure on how to use then to get a required item back.

See Kordoba's post 'OK I GOT IT!! This is how to get your Explosive Keg back or any other lost item!', quoted near the end of this post, as a reference.

Warning
This trick should only be used as a last resort. If possible, it would be much better to re-load a recent save, and do part of the game over. Some events or experience bonuses can be tied to the finding / picking up of an object. Bypassing normal game operations to get an item may result in missed experience, or other problems.

If you do have to resort to this procedure, please read this post through before attempting, and make sure you follow the steps below carefully. Failure to backup and restore your original inventory files as described below will likely result in missing quest items, and will cause other items to disappear.

Disclaimer
I have tested this procedure to see that it works, but only on a temporary game. I have not lost any items, and have never tried to kept an item from a different inventory set for any significant amount of time. That said, I have posted inventory files before for others, and have not heard of any problems.

Another Warning
These inventory files are from the English version of the game. Kiya and I swapped some files to test whether they would be compatible between English and German games. Most quest items (keys, letters, books, etc.) work fine between different language versions. Any items with random stats will cause a problem, though. This is due to not including / swapping the items.000 file, which can be very large (it would quadruple the size of the zip files below), and is not needed for any quest items I have come across. Also, the only way to keep the random stats on an item from a different inventory set would be to keep the corresponding items.000 file, which in turn would morph all of your own equipment that had random stats. The German holy items work fine on an English game, and can be sacrificed. English dragon armour retains their names, but loose their stats in the German game. German standard equipment is morphed into something else in the English game. See, for example; morph1 (70KB), morph2 (42KB) and morph3 (38KB).
You should be able to use these files with any language version, but proceed with caution.

The procedure for getting back lost items;

1 ) Download the zip file for the item you require, and unzip it to a temporary folder. Most zip files are just the 6 inv.* files, but a couple contain two sets in separate folders.

2 ) Save your game under a new name, lets say 'inventory1', for the sake of reference. Really, save it under a new name first; better safe than sorry.

3 ) Create a subfolder in this saved game folder, and move all 6 inv.* files into it. Important: You must restore these files at the end of the procedure; failure to do so will probably result in missing quest items (and will cause other items to disappear), since your game and mine were very likely not done in the exact same order.

3b ) Confirm that you have completed step 3

4 ) Move the new inventory files from the temporary folder into the 'inventory1' game folder.

5 ) Re-load the 'inventory1' game, so that the inventory will be updated.

6 ) Drop the item you require on the ground. Some sets of inventory contain more than one item; take only what you need, to avoid duplication.

7 ) Save the game under a new name, such as 'inventory2'.

8 ) Copy the original inv.* files from the subfolder in the 'inventory1' saved game, to the 'inventory2' saved game, overwriting the files there.

8b ) Confirm that you have completed step 8

9 ) Re-load the 'inventory2' game.

You should now have back your full original inventory, plus the lost item.

Inventory Files
These files contain only the items specified (in the inventory pane, nothing equipped). Since you are restoring the original inventory files, you do not need to worry about having both teleporter pyramids, as Kordoba suggests.

The inv.* files keep track of every item you are carrying, every item in all opened/moved/identified chests, and the inventory of every NPC. You must backup and restore your own original inventory files to prevent various quest (and other) items from disappearing, since it is highly unlikely that you have done all quests in exactly the same order as myself.

Please do a thorough search of the forums and/or ask for help before determining that this is the only option left. Swapping game files around should only be done as a last resort. For items which should be dropped, run your mouse slowly over the area, it could have landed near a southern wall, or be otherwise obstructed.

The inventory files

Due to the time limit on editing posts, any additions to this list will have to be made as a reply. If there have been unnecessary posts, excessive quotes or chat within this topic, you will need to search for additions or corrections.

Ancient Pyramids (58KB) - After you become the Divine One, your teleporter stones get replaced by ancient pyramids. If you have not yet reached the wastelands, the inv.* files for the teleporter stones are below. If you forgot to bring one or both of the teleporter stones with you, here is a screen shot of where you can find replacement Ancient Pyramid(s) (71KB).

Balin's necklace (31KB) - required in the poor quarters to confront Jonas about the theft. If you looted the necklace and sold it before speaking to Balin, that NPC should still have it, assuming you remember or can find who you sold it to.

Ben's ale (42KB) - This is the bottle of ale from the room just north of the castle throne room (screenshot), which Ben wants you to get (he is on the north east section of the castle wall).

Boratus (118KB) - This contains two sets of inventory files, the key Boratus should drop when you kill him (best option), and the book from the chest the key opens (use only if there is a problem with the chest itself).

Ceremonial Items (57KB) - Two items are just to the left of the desk; Josephine should drop the staff, though it is sometimes in the chest at the back of the room. If applicable, check out Josephine herself stuck in the wall.

charms and statuettes (53KB) - There are probably easier ways to cheat (see the editors here), but these inventory files (from a save at the end of the game) contain 65 gold charms, 59 silver charms and the Frog, Spider, Bee(tle) and Cat Statuettes.

Corinna (53KB) - The items needed to complete the quest Do I want to summon a demon? - the Book of Summoning, Bottle of Exquisite Wine, and a branch from the Talking Tree in the Dark Forest.

Cybu's letter (42KB) - This contains the letter dropped by the assassin that killed the Duke, required (if you decided to deal with Cybu yourself, rather than report to Commander Ralph first) to complete the Duke's Murder quest.

Dragon Armour (58KB) - This is from a save immediately after getting the armour, before identifying it. This should reduce or eliminate the problems with items that have random stats. Even if it does morph, the stats are reset when it is forged with the Dragon Heart, so it will work to complete that quest.

Dragon Belt key (43KB) - The key that should be in the shelf upstairs (screenshot) in the house in Verdistis (map) that has the chest with the Dragon Belt downstairs.
Level 5 Lockpick can also open the chest (you can get 2 levels in Verdistis by joining the thieves guild).

Dragon Shield (43KB) - it is possible to get back into the castle after being kicked out if you missed the shield (toss a teleporter in; click inside the gate, pause after being stopped, click inside again), and it is better to replace the key than shield if you can not get into the armoury.

Dragon Heart (61KB) - This should be dropped by the dragon rider.

Dwarven Mine items (58KB) - The Axe of Stone, and the letter to Gregor implicating him in the theft.

Elrath (45KB) - Contains the letter and two cure potions from Dr Elrath's basement. It is also possible to get back into the basement yourself, either by tossing a teleporter stone through a window (screenshot), or the procedure in the Fix for the missing Catacombs Portal topic.

Elrath's house key (36KB) - Until you confront the good doctor with the letter from his basement, you should be able to lockpick the front door (Lockpick level 2 required).

Elven Amulet (55KB) - The fake amulet crafted by the dwarven jeweler, from the picture given to you by the elf in the elven village standing beside the well

Explosives (37KB) - This was given to you by Captain Mitox.

Finnigan's Magic Lockpicks (32KB) - The lockpicks are in a barrel in the inventory; open the barrel and drop the lockpicks on the ground, but leave the barrel in your inventory.
In the unpatched disk version of the game, a different technique was required (How to get Finnigan's lockpicks back).

Heartseeker, Penumbra's dagger (46KB) - This should be in the south west room of the City Watch building, past commander Kratus' quarters.

HolyItems.zip (54KB) - Contains the three holy items; see Gathering the Holy Items and the Sacrifice for detailed information.

Imp's house key (58KB) - Use this only if you can not get the house key from the queen bee (due to a problem with the cut scenes, for example), and can not re-load. Getting the key this way results in a broken quest, but will allow you to complete imp council member quest.

Letter for Captain Mitox (32KB) - This sealed letter from General Alix will start the two army quests (if you wish to loot the barracks and army camp, do so before completing the second quest).

Mardaneus' Key (52KB) - The key should be straight into Lanilor's house, past the entrance and sitting on top of the bookshelves, with a banner and a plant; try the alt key.

Merchant Guild Key (43KB) - Given to you when you become a member of the merchant's guild.

Merchant Guild's Financial Records (45KB) - from Malcolm's house. If you have talked to Maria and got the quest to clear her name, this ledger book should be on top of a cabinet in the bedroom (51KB).

Nericon's garden (45KB) - Contains the key to the garden from Blake, and the book from the three guys out front.

Pedro's Letter (44KB) - The letter Pedro drops in the Ars Magicana sewers, as part of the Tingalf/Marcus/Depot quest.

Poison for Orc Well (44KB) - This was given to you by Captain Mitox.

Portable Bed (41KB) - This bed is located north of the cursed Abby, in a house along the eastern side of the river. If you forgot to bring it to the wastelands with you, here it is. Otherwise, keep close to the river, and you will avoid the majority of the undead in the area.

Rimmer's ale (41KB) - A stack of ale. See 'Rimmer is missing' (quoted as a reference here), if applicable.

Scrying Balls (49KB) - The seven scrying balls from the council hall, which should be on the floor in front of their respective statues.

Silver armour upgrade (54KB) - This contains the items necessary to enter the easter egg area, and upgrade the Silver Breastplate to Armour Of Larian (see here for a detailed description). Included is the silver armour, 2002 gold pieces, the 4 treasure maps, 5 bottles of Rimmer's ale and the 4 ropes from beside the teleporter pad.

Silver Breastplate (55KB) - the Silver armour from the chest in the Stalker's cave. This will morph slightly (as expected, not swapping the items.000 file), but will work to trigger the easter egg teleporter and can be upgraded to Larian armour. I tested this in a v1.32 game with a v1.33 set of inventory files.

Stormfist castle armoury key (42KB) - the key to the armoury to get the Dragon Shield, which should be on a table in the room just to the north (map). Hitting the Alt key should reveal it.

Sword from the Stone (31KB) - Fake Excalibur, if you want to put it back to re-seal the demon, but don't know where the original is.
If enough time has passed to sell or loose the sword (and you can not buy it back or find it), the demon has probably started killing NPCs in the Dark Forest (no essential NPCs will be killed), in which case you may want to check out Reviving dead NPCs.

Talking Tree (54KB) - Contains the branch from the talking tree, as well as the herb required by the alchemist.

Teleporter Scrolls (58KB) - For the locations of the scrolls, see VERY BIG SPOILER ON TELEPORTERS.

Teleporter Stones (32KB) - warning These are suppose to get stolen when you enter the castle, and are returned after you rescue Zandalor and he teleports you to a new location (check the north west room after clearing that area). If you do not have a teleporter stone when you enter the castle, they will either disappear or stop working until the point they would have been returned; this is part of the plot.

Thieves' Guild quest items (95KB) - Apparently there can be problems if you do not complete both quests within some time frame. The pickpocket folder contains the inventory files for Sweeney's necklace, the lockpick folder contains the files for Rob's bottle of ale. The necklace description may get morphed, but will still work to complete the quest. If the inventory files do not help, see FIX for the Missing Catacombs Portal.

Tipsix's Key (35KB) - The key Tipsix drops in the poison cave, for the door in the cellar of the Blue Boar inn.

Treasure Maps (57KB) - For the locations of the four maps, see Larian/Silver armour-screenie-spoiler.

The merchant you sold it to more than likely still has the shield. Check your usual trading partners if you don't remember who you sold it to. The shield would morph if you got a replacement from a different inventory set, though would still work to get the experience and level of Elemental Strike for completing the set. If you have an old save when you still had the shield, you can get it from there, if not PM me for a set of inventory files.

Raze, this info is great and I appreciate your hard work and have benefitted from it when Josie dropped her staff in the wall and I needed a rescue.

I'm trying to fix my wife's game now...she lost one of her treasure maps, and I've fixed that, but....

She never looted the castle before she was evicted and is missing the Dragon Shield and, as far as I can tell, has no way to get the shield. She has all other pieces of the set, but, need the shield. Can you help?

Thanks in advance

Just walk into the castle. When they stop you, click inside again as soon as the guard stops talking; they will not be quick enough to stop you the second time.
You can also toss a teleporter stone into the castle and get past the guards that way.

Cool trick.
Can you post the Eye of the Cyclops, needed for the Warrior Guild quest ?
I lost it during a crash while saving. Of course before upgrading.

Crash seems to have a put a little of the new save on top of the previous save. I turned in the eye, then tried to save. Now when I load I am back to before turning in the eye, but it is no where to be found. I hope this can fix it.

Try deleting all of the files in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\Dynamic' folder.
This folder is used as a cache for the game. Files are created / copied there from the save game folder when you load, and written / copied from that folder when you save a game. The files will be re-created as required the next time you start Divinity. If there was a corrupt file in that folder, deleting the files should fix the problem.
After this, start Divinity and re-load the previous save.
I'll find a save for the inventory files in the morning, if the above doesn't work.

Awesome.
Thanks for the eye kiya. Weird my charater was invisible, but inventory worked. And the fix works as advertised.

Raze, tried the clearing the caches, but it was really a save game corruption.
It would start to load with the position where I tried to save after turning in the eye, then half way, shift to the position of the previous save before getting the eye, but the eye was gone.

Now back to the slaughter...

Hi Raze

First off thanks for posting this topic! It's very helpful *clap*

I'm having problems though... I did everything step by step (or so I thought) & when I re-load the second saved game I do not have anything that I did in my inventory or on me.

I doubled checked to make sure that the original inv files from the first saved game (invitory1) were all in the second saved game (invitory2) folder, all of it was there but when I load up the invitory2 saved game all I have is the item that I needed laying on the ground where I dropped it & nothing else

Any suggestions on how to fix this or what I did wrong? Thank you for your time

Are you sure you grabbed the original backup inventory files (ie from a sub folder of inventory1) and copied them into the inventory2 folder? Try deleting the inventory files from the inventory2 save, and re-copy your original files. Maybe you just hit 'no' instead of 'yes' in the confirmation dialog for overwriting the files in the second save.

I'm just no good at this obviously, been trying to do it the last 2 hours lol. The quest wasent that important anyway (I hope lol) so I'll just continue on from where I left off. Thank you anyway

What about the necklace you have to duplicate?
I brought the picture to the dwarven jeweller Vignus, and collected the item later, but it's not in my inventory and the elven beauty still refuses to kiss me...
Can you get the necklace here?

The Elven Amulet does not work.
At least, it doesn't work for me. I went to the Jeweller, I got the Necklace from him, but it did not appear in my inventory, and propably the quest should change when accepting the necklace, but that didn't happen.
So I get back to the Elven Beauty and all I can do is ask for more specific information on the whereabouts of this necklace.

I haven't tried selling the Jeweller the necklace and buying it again afterwards, but I don't think that does the trick. Well, one more unsolved quest for me.

If you never got the amulet, then apparently part of the quest was not updated properly, despite the speech option to the contrary, and the game is checking for the absent quest log update rather than the amulet in your inventory.

After paying to have the amulet duplicated, you should just have to wait a few minutes (real time) and talk to the jeweler again. He will open the conversation saying the work is done, and your only response is that you would bet nobody could tell it was a fake.

You will meet Dr Elrath once more (briefly), but not until after you retrieve an item from his cellar. Make sure you explore and loot everywhere there first, since that is easier than trying to get back in afterwards (the door is sealed, so you either have to toss a teleporter stone through a window to get back in (screenshot) or resort to other other means).

The doors inside the house are controlled by something other than keys....
The lanterns act like levers, and if you play a bit you should be able to get to the cellar.

The letter is on a table in a room in the far north east of the second level of the dwarven mines (map). Drag and drop it into your inventory and visit the king again (toss it into the room first, if the guards take it).

If the dwarven council member isn't near the axe monument, he very often moves into the house just south of there. If you don't see him right away, try running around the house close to the walls; if he is standing beside a wall he may not show up until you get close. One person reported finding him over in a group around the town crier.

I knew which quest you meant. You can use this procedure to replace the exquisite wine, but there is no need to.

Corinna will actually accept any wine; visit the wine merchant Pierre, just north east of the Ducal inn.

Unfortunately there is no way in-game to get another copy of the Nericon book. If you read over the 'lost items' procedure a couple times but still have a problem with it, let me know where exactly and I'll try to explain it more clearly.
Though a bit overwhelming at first glance, if you have any experience moving files around on your computer (organizing stuff or making backups, etc) it shouldn't be too hard to replace the book. If you save under a new name before starting, and go through the procedure step by step, it is unlikely you could make any mistakes that aren't easy to recover from.

You do need to speak to the merchant Marcus about the letter from the cave. He should direct you to Tingalf the black market dealer, who gives you a hint about where his goods are coming from (don't think you need that hint, though). If you head to the Rivertown sewers entrance in the middle of the Ars Magicana square, then go a bit east, you'll find some thugs. The leader drops a letter you need to take to Lt. Robin (usually in the north west part of the square). Once Tingalf is arrested, you should be able to tell Trevor that to complete the quest.

Do you get any speech options about Tingalf when you talk to Lt. Robin?

I know that I am resurrecting an old topic and I should be killed and hanged for this, but I'm in a bit of a problem and I hope someone can help me ...

Thing is I got the quest from Alix to go talk to Mitox, but when I got to him, he doesn't seem to care and he won't give me the quest to ravage the supply train from the orcs.

I think I lost the sealed package (I read about it in some walkthroughs) due to a game glitch, if there was any sealed package in the first place ... Now I'm turning to you and ask if anyone can post an inventory fix for that sealed package in the same manner as the other fixes posted here, or just help me get that quest from Mitox.

Sorry again for reviving the topic and hope that someone will reply smile

Do you have the 'Contact Captain Mitox' quest in your log? If so, then the dialog is probably just missing due to not having the letter. If not, did you agree to help General Alix when talking to her?

OK, thanks a gazillion times. You did a titanic work reinstalling the game just for me and replying so fast, I think you are one in a million on game forums.

This was actually for my girlfriend who had the quest, but lost the letter. She said she will build a temple for you ^_^.

Hello!

I've got a problem trying to get Dragon Shield from Stormfist Castle. Didn't get it the first time, but managed to get back into the castle running past the guards. The problem is there's no key to the storage room anywhere. I probably picked it up the previous time and lost it somewhere. Got two other bronze keys in my inventory, but when I try to open the door - they don't work.
So if you can post the shield item here - it would be much appreciated smile

Did you check the room just north of the armoury? (map) Hit the Alt key...

I can get the inventory files with the shield, but it would probably be better to get the key.
I'm heading out shortly but will get the files and edit this post later today.

Alternately, you can bypass the door: Teleporting Anywhere, via hex editor.

Tyvm!

I checked the room north like ten times, threw all the items around and the key just wasn't there. I suppose I picked it up the first time I was in the castle, but opened something else with it if it's even possible. Cause I definately didn't throw away any keys.

But it doesn't matter anymore, cause Hex teleporting worked like a charm.

So thank you very much again! smile

There are two duplicate locks in the game, that I know of (and the armoury door isn't one of them).
The key you are given to Nericon's Garden by Blake can also open the castle graveyard (which would be opened anyway after going to the castle and preceding with the main plot quest for awhile). There is another key that can open either lock in a back room of Walker's house (the alchemist in Ars Magicana), though it is a little tricky getting in there without upsetting him.

Well then, maybe I ran into some bug, or was just careless and lost the key.
Good to know it's not a game breaker though, thanks to your help wink

Actually, the letter to Gregor is already included in the Dwarven Mine items set of inventory files. I gave the map to the location in the post you quoted because that person had simply not gotten the letter in the first place.

I think if you talk to the dwarven council member first he takes the letter, before you can present it to the king. Some people had the guards take the axe or letter, but could toss those items into the room before entering, and pick them up afterwards (or kill the guards and just walk in...
Poison Cloud cast near but not on an NPC can do damage without triggering retaliation, and without a reputation drop. Essential NPCs should be protected from death.

Hi, Raze. Can you provide the file for Maradino's Secret Notes?

I can't find it anywhere. I do not desteroy or sell such items, but I can't find it anywhere, neither in Homestead nor at any shopkeeper around. I also don't have an old savegame to use the inventory trick.

Thanks in advance.

This procedure only works for Divine Divinity. The save format is completely different in Original Sin.

Thanks Raze.

Bigger question: should I give up and start over? I'm running into an issue where a couple of major items are plain missing from my game world, including:

Strange Dagger (not in the book)
Dragon Belt Key (not on the shelf)
Dragon Belt (not in the chest)
Cutlass of Totu Chabahl (not in Thieves Guild treasure room)

I can replace them using the inventory trick, but I'm wondering if something got corrupted that is going to result in me constantly working around missing items.

Have you seen this issue before?

Thanks!

Did you try the inventory file swap before, and not restore the original files?

It is possible a corrupt file in the dynamic folder could have carried over the status of some items from a previous game. If that is the case, depending on how far you got your last game, it may be safer to start over.
Before doing so, first delete all of the files in the '..\Divine Divinity\Dynamic' folder, as a precaution.
This folder is used as a cache for the game. Files are created / copied there from the save game folder when you load, and written / copied from that folder when you save a game. The files will be re-created as required the next time you start Divinity.

Thanks Raze. Tried emptying the dynamic folder but still didn't work.

Hmm, I have a guess as to what happened and all my fault.

I misplaced the exploding keg earlier, and used the trick where I dropped all of my items on the ground, copied the inv files from a save with just the keg, and then picked up all my items. I didn't know about the better method which you suggested I use for the strange dagger.

This means I had a save that had already visited Verdistis, but then overwrote the inv files from a save that had never visited there. My guess is this is causing key items to not appear not in Verdistis.

I deleted older saves, so I think I'll start over and be extra careful not to lose key items!

If only I could bring my awesome dagger with me (I tried bringing it into a new game and no dice...)

Thanks for the help

For Divinity: Original Sin you could try the Save Game Editor. I didn't see that amulet listed in a quick check, but may have just missed it.

If it is possible to sell the amulet, the NPC should still have it, so you can check the traders you usually deal with.

If that doesn't help, email supportdos@larian.com, with a description of the problem and the report.zip file generated by the D:OS support tool (for the PC version). The report will contain system and game information, as well as your saved games. To reduce the file size, all but your latest save can be deleted from the zip.

Hello, forum!
Did everything as suggested in the discription and even tried both of *.zip files related to Ben's quest (about bringing him ale), but unfortunately to no avail. He just does not accept the items from those saves or any other booze I bring him. I know I can just ignore that quest, but I am a completionist and it is strongly against my nature. Especially since I failed the escort quest. So, please, help me.

Update: The quest is done! So, how and why?
As to why, I have no slightest idea, probably a bug.
As to how: I searched all the castle for suitable drink, then SOLD (actually gave avay) it to Ben, then bought it all back and voila!
Ben suddenly accepted it! Unfortunately, I can not tell exactly which bottle he was pleased with, because after quitting the dialog with Ben ALL of booze disappeared from inventory, but hey, that is not a problem =) If you had such problem here is a little solution, no fiddling with save files needed!

P.S. But thanks for the help, anyway, Raze.

If you zip your save and email it to me (raze@larian.com), I'll take a look at it.

I've updated the links for the Elven Ceremonial Items and Letter for Captain Mitox.

EDIT: I've updated all the links for the remaining inventory files.

Hey, first, wanted to say thanks for this thread, it's helped me jump back to previous saves and pick up things I've missed without having to redo everything.
I think my first time through the castle, I accidentally deleted the Dragon shield (I've done it to later items and caught it, but this was before I realized you could do it). My problem is that if I try and pull it from an earlier save or the .zip file here, it says it's a bow or axe, and has no special stats. Any idea what's going on or how to get around it? I tried copying the items.000 file along with it, and got it to stay as an unidentified lvl5 shield, but then the rest of my inventory items were screwed up and lost their stats.
Thanks again.

Unfortunately, equipment stats are saved in the items.000 file, so using this procedure on equipment will result in the item morphing (as described in the original post). When I tested, though, unique equipment kept their name and type, so the dragon shield would be usable to complete the quest (wearing the full set), but probably not functional as a shield.

Hey, so I'm a few years late because for some reason I chose to play all the Original Sins first and then start over with DD, but I find myself in the spot, that I have done the unthinkable and used Freeze for a few Boss enemies, so I'm missing some items. Most importantly the Dragonheart Gem. Since I didn't know about this issue I sadly can't load an earlier save because I overwrote it pretty much directly after the fight and the last one was a while before that...
Would it be possible to get the Download Link(s) working again?
