Kordoba posted a description of how to get back lost items, and helped fix a lot of broken quests. However, some people do not keep older saved games, and due to a bug, some items have just not been where they should be. This post is a list of inventory files, and a step-by-step procedure on how to use then to get a required item back.
See Kordoba's post '
OK I GOT IT!! This is how to get your Explosive Keg back or any other lost item!', quoted near the end of
this post, as a reference.
WarningThis trick should only be used as a last resort. If possible, it would be much better to re-load a recent save, and do part of the game over. Some events or experience bonuses can be tied to the finding / picking up of an object. Bypassing normal game operations to get an item may result in missed experience, or other problems.
If you do have to resort to this procedure, please read this post through before attempting, and make sure you follow the steps below carefully. Failure to backup and restore your original inventory files as described below will likely result in missing quest items, and
will cause other items to disappear.
DisclaimerI have tested this procedure to see that it works, but only on a temporary game. I have not lost any items, and have never tried to kept an item from a different inventory set for any significant amount of time. That said, I have posted inventory files before for others, and have not heard of any problems.
Another WarningThese inventory files are from the English version of the game. Kiya and I swapped some files to test whether they would be compatible between English and German games. Most quest items (keys, letters, books, etc.) work fine between different language versions. Any items with random stats will cause a problem, though. This is due to not including / swapping the items.000 file, which can be very large (it would quadruple the size of the zip files below), and is not needed for any quest items I have come across. Also, the only way to keep the random stats on an item from a different inventory set would be to keep the corresponding items.000 file, which in turn would morph all of your own equipment that had random stats. The German holy items work fine on an English game, and can be sacrificed. English dragon armour retains their names, but loose their stats in the German game. German standard equipment is morphed into something else in the English game. See, for example;
morph1 (70KB),
morph2 (42KB) and
morph3 (38KB).
You should be able to use these files with any language version, but proceed with caution.
The procedure for getting back lost items;1 ) Download the zip file for the item you require, and unzip it to a temporary folder. Most zip files are just the 6 inv.* files, but a couple contain two sets in separate folders.
2 )
Save your game under a new name, lets say 'inventory1', for the sake of reference. Really, save it under a new name first; better safe than sorry.
3 ) Create a subfolder in this saved game folder, and move all 6 inv.* files into it.
Important: You
must restore these files at the end of the procedure;
failure to do so will probably result in missing quest items (and will cause other items to disappear), since your game and mine were very likely not done in the exact same order.
3b ) Confirm that you have completed step 3
4 ) Move the new inventory files from the temporary folder into the 'inventory1' game folder.
5 ) Re-load the 'inventory1' game, so that the inventory will be updated.
6 ) Drop the item you require on the ground. Some sets of inventory contain more than one item; take only what you need, to avoid duplication.
7 ) Save the game under a new name, such as 'inventory2'.
8 ) Copy the
original inv.* files from the subfolder in the 'inventory1' saved game, to the 'inventory2' saved game, overwriting the files there.
8b ) Confirm that you have completed step 8
9 ) Re-load the 'inventory2' game.
You should now have back your full original inventory, plus the lost item.
Inventory FilesThese files contain only the items specified (in the inventory pane, nothing equipped). Since you are restoring the original inventory files, you do not need to worry about having both teleporter pyramids, as Kordoba suggests.
The inv.* files keep track of every item you are carrying, every item in all opened/moved/identified chests, and the inventory of every NPC.
You must backup and restore your own original inventory files to prevent various quest (and other) items from disappearing, since it is highly unlikely that you have done all quests in exactly the same order as myself.
Please do a thorough search of the forums and/or ask for help before determining that this is the only option left. Swapping game files around should only be done as a last resort. For items which should be dropped, run your mouse slowly over the area, it could have landed near a southern wall, or be otherwise obstructed.
The inventory filesDue to the time limit on editing posts, any additions to this list will have to be made as a reply. If there have been unnecessary posts, excessive quotes or chat within this topic, you will need to search for additions or corrections.
Ancient Pyramids (58KB) - After you become the Divine One, your teleporter stones get replaced by ancient pyramids. If you have not yet reached the wastelands, the inv.* files for the teleporter stones are below. If you forgot to bring one or both of the teleporter stones with you, here is a screen shot of where you can find
replacement Ancient Pyramid(s) (71KB).
Balin's necklace (31KB) - required in the poor quarters to confront Jonas about the theft. If you looted the necklace and sold it before speaking to Balin, that NPC should still have it, assuming you remember or can find who you sold it to.
Ben's ale (42KB) - This is the bottle of ale from the room just north of the castle throne room (
screenshot), which Ben wants you to get (he is on the north east section of the castle wall).
Boratus (118KB) - This contains two sets of inventory files, the key Boratus should drop when you kill him (best option), and the book from the chest the key opens (use only if there is a problem with the chest itself).
Ceremonial Items (57KB) - Two items are just to the left of the desk; Josephine should drop the staff, though it is sometimes in the chest at the back of the room. If applicable, check out
Josephine herself stuck in the wall.
charms and statuettes (53KB) - There are probably easier ways to cheat (see the editors
here), but these inventory files (from a save at the end of the game) contain 65 gold charms, 59 silver charms and the Frog, Spider, Bee(tle) and Cat Statuettes.
Corinna (53KB) - The items needed to complete the quest
Do I want to summon a demon? - the Book of Summoning, Bottle of Exquisite Wine, and a branch from the Talking Tree in the Dark Forest.
Cybu's letter (42KB) - This contains the letter dropped by the assassin that killed the Duke, required (if you decided to deal with Cybu yourself, rather than report to Commander Ralph first) to complete the
Duke's Murder quest.
Dragon Armour (58KB) - This is from a save immediately after getting the armour, before identifying it. This should reduce or eliminate the problems with items that have random stats. Even if it does morph, the stats are reset when it is forged with the Dragon Heart, so it will work to complete that quest.
Dragon Belt key (43KB) - The key that should be in the shelf upstairs (
screenshot) in the house in Verdistis (
map) that has the chest with the Dragon Belt downstairs.
Level 5 Lockpick can also open the chest (you can get 2 levels in Verdistis by joining the thieves guild).
Dragon Shield (43KB) - it is possible to get back into the castle after being kicked out if you missed the shield (toss a teleporter in; click inside the gate, pause after being stopped, click inside again), and it is better to replace the key than shield if you can not get into the armoury.
Dragon Heart (61KB) - This should be dropped by the dragon rider.
Dwarven Mine items (58KB) - The Axe of Stone, and the letter to Gregor implicating him in the theft.
Elrath (45KB) - Contains the letter and two cure potions from Dr Elrath's basement. It is also possible to get back into the basement yourself, either by tossing a teleporter stone through a window (
screenshot), or the procedure in the
Fix for the missing Catacombs Portal topic.
Elrath's house key (36KB) - Until you confront the good doctor with the letter from his basement, you should be able to lockpick the front door (Lockpick level 2 required).
Elven Amulet (55KB) - The fake amulet crafted by the dwarven jeweler, from the picture given to you by the elf in the elven village standing beside the well
Explosives (37KB) - This was given to you by Captain Mitox.
Finnigan's Magic Lockpicks (32KB) - The lockpicks are in a barrel in the inventory; open the barrel and drop the lockpicks on the ground, but leave the barrel in your inventory.
In the unpatched disk version of the game, a different technique was required (
How to get Finnigan's lockpicks back).
Heartseeker, Penumbra's dagger (46KB) - This should be in the south west room of the City Watch building, past commander Kratus' quarters.
HolyItems.zip (54KB) - Contains the three holy items; see
Gathering the Holy Items and the Sacrifice for detailed information.
Imp's house key (58KB) - Use this only if you can not get the house key from the queen bee (due to a problem with the cut scenes, for example), and can not re-load. Getting the key this way results in a broken quest, but will allow you to complete imp council member quest.
Letter for Captain Mitox (32KB) - This sealed letter from General Alix will start the two army quests (if you wish to loot the barracks and army camp, do so before completing the second quest).
Mardaneus' Key (52KB) - The key should be straight into Lanilor's house, past the entrance and sitting on top of the bookshelves, with a banner and a plant; try the alt key.
Merchant Guild Key (43KB) - Given to you when you become a member of the merchant's guild.
Merchant Guild's Financial Records (45KB) - from Malcolm's house. If you have talked to Maria and got the quest to clear her name, this ledger book should be
on top of a cabinet in the bedroom (51KB).
Nericon's garden (45KB) - Contains the key to the garden from Blake, and the book from the three guys out front.
Pedro's Letter (44KB) - The letter Pedro drops in the Ars Magicana sewers, as part of the Tingalf/Marcus/Depot quest.
Poison for Orc Well (44KB) - This was given to you by Captain Mitox.
Portable Bed (41KB) - This bed is located north of the cursed Abby, in a house along the eastern side of the river. If you forgot to bring it to the wastelands with you, here it is. Otherwise, keep close to the river, and you will avoid the majority of the undead in the area.
Rimmer's ale (41KB) - A stack of ale. See '
Rimmer is missing' (
quoted as a reference here), if applicable.
Scrying Balls (49KB) - The seven scrying balls from the council hall, which should be on the floor in front of their respective statues.
Silver armour upgrade (54KB) - This contains the items necessary to enter the easter egg area, and upgrade the Silver Breastplate to Armour Of Larian (see
here for a detailed description). Included is the silver armour, 2002 gold pieces, the 4 treasure maps, 5 bottles of Rimmer's ale and the 4 ropes from beside the teleporter pad.
Silver Breastplate (55KB) - the Silver armour from the chest in the Stalker's cave. This will morph slightly (as expected, not swapping the items.000 file), but will work to trigger the easter egg teleporter and can be upgraded to Larian armour. I tested this in a v1.32 game with a v1.33 set of inventory files.
Stormfist castle armoury key (42KB) - the key to the armoury to get the Dragon Shield, which should be on a table in the room just to the north (
map). Hitting the Alt key should reveal it.
Sword from the Stone (31KB) - Fake Excalibur, if you want to put it back to re-seal the demon, but don't know where the original is.
If enough time has passed to sell or loose the sword (and you can not buy it back or find it), the demon has probably started killing NPCs in the Dark Forest (no essential NPCs will be killed), in which case you may want to check out
Reviving dead NPCs.
Talking Tree (54KB) - Contains the branch from the talking tree, as well as the herb required by the alchemist.
Teleporter Scrolls (58KB) - For the locations of the scrolls, see
VERY BIG SPOILER ON TELEPORTERS.
Teleporter Stones (32KB) -
warning These are suppose to get stolen when you enter the castle, and are returned after you rescue Zandalor and he teleports you to a new location (check the north west room after clearing that area). If you do not have a teleporter stone when you enter the castle, they will either disappear or stop working until the point they would have been returned; this is part of the plot.
Thieves' Guild quest items (95KB) - Apparently there can be problems if you do not complete both quests within some time frame. The pickpocket folder contains the inventory files for Sweeney's necklace, the lockpick folder contains the files for Rob's bottle of ale. The necklace description may get morphed, but will still work to complete the quest. If the inventory files do not help, see
FIX for the Missing Catacombs Portal.
Tipsix's Key (35KB) - The key Tipsix drops in the poison cave, for the door in the cellar of the Blue Boar inn.
Treasure Maps (57KB) - For the locations of the four maps, see
Larian/Silver armour-screenie-spoiler.
