im wondering which one to do bring his soul back or break it which one is better i gave it back on my other account

Returning the soul stone gives a better reward (Lovis unlocks a chest by the throne with a random legendary quality item); the ghosts give nothing besides their gratitude.

I felt more like giving his soul back. I've never smashed it...

Smashing the stone is worth trying at least once (you can save the game first), just for the dialog options when you go talk to Lovis...
