At the beginning of the fjord, I did do what you suggested and killed all except for the tribal chief who does not take damage. I just ran past him and went back to Broken Valley.
I did find the cave below Sassan's grave and killed everything there.
I went back and was able to kill the creatures after taking the ring. I am now looking for a way to get into the tower.
