Where are you and what type of character are you playing?

Try a different direction. There should be areas and opponents more appropriate to your level. If you have finished off everything in the beginning area and are past where you meet the dragon knight (I was level 6 before this point, but killing a couple opponents during it brought me up to level 7).
I was able to use a bow to take out the level 8 skeletons at the main (locked) gate of the tower (switching to melee when they got close), with several strategic retreats to heal behind the large tree down hill. As long as you get one or two of them each attack, the next approach will be easier. After that I decided to avoid the skeletons around the base of the tower and continued south east to clear the level 6/7 goblins, and the first couple level 9 bandits.
The bandits were too tough in large groups, so I went west of the place you meet the dragon knight, and up the northern path through the mountains (and level 6/7 goblins). Farther west I cleared partly towards the passage to Maxos temple (at level 8 or 9 I could take out the level 11 black ring members one or two at a time), then decided to leave that area and clear out the derelict tunnel (the two goblin entrances already cleared above ground). After that I finished off the skeletons around Lovis's tower. I kept exploring, though, and did a fair bit before actually entering the tower.

It is not impossible. Many people have beat it.

Of course many people have also had problems trying to go directly to main plot quests without exploring or doing any side quests.

A general rule of thumb is if the head dragon slayer (or the dragon knight, after you meet her) tell you to do something, feel free to delay as long as you wish, or can, before doing it. If you are told not to do something, though, it would be a good idea to make a new save before trying it.

I do as many side quests as I can, but since this game does not really mark where you have to go I'm not able to finish that many because I find myself lost....I did listen to your advice from your first post Raze and so far it is working out well. P.S. im in the same place that you described. Also to answer your first question, I'm a dual weild warrior and I was wondering if that were a hard class to play and if theirs and easier one to play as....I'm kust trying to get a feel for the game.

Thank You

I am also duel wielding, and have not had any troubles that couldn't be solved by trying another area first, help from my creature (which I got about level 13) or a few healing potions. Actually, I have not been using very many healing potions (before I got the game there were several topics about people running out of potions), except for the occasional difficult fight. I learned level 1 of the healing spell when I got to level 17 (IIRC), which is kind of handy, but I don't need it much (especially with Life Leech).

You don't need to do side quests in a linear manner. Just explore everywhere and you will come across quest solutions for quests that don't give you a direction / location to go on right away. I've found a number of quest items before even getting the quests.

Yes the game is very difficult in the beginning and it takes a lot of patience but it is possible. The game is slow to start but hang in there and you will see it gets a lot more fun and less aggravating!

the divinity games are and hopefully always will be different from the normal style

there a very high challenge early on and keep at that as theres no reall grinding for levels and such it makes it harder to pwn everything, but they make up for it in story deapth and humor

At level one summon undead you get a level one creature but it casts fireball, and throwing him out in front of you to soften up the enemy in ones earlier levels can be a big help. smile
