Which chest?
If you mindread Edmund, at the front gate, the key to the chest hidden behind some bushes by one of the buildings will be in the training area, on one of the rocks around the fire (from the entrance head straight to the fire and look down).
The locked chest near the mage requires level 1 Lockpick to open. There is a skill book in the training area, on top of some rocks (between where the lone mage is and the camp with the other 3 goblins). Alternately, it is possible to reach level 2 by entering the training area repeatedly, and get a skill point that way.
