The very first time I began Divinity II on "low" difficulty I had also problems to be alive!
After a time playing and replaying this game I can now play without many problems on "high" difficulty!
Try for sure many different strategies by killing enemies!
I use the whole game a bow and find it useful. I take at least 2 points in Ranger Stealth the fast I can
Personally I find the Skill Wirlwind more useful for breaking crates. Plus is good if many enemies surrounds you: do a wrilwind and jump back or forward, away of the group of enemies.
And furthermore I use a Two-handed Sword for melee combat and sometimes an Axe or One-handed Sword.
If you have problems because the combat is too hard, try Mage Skills like Magic Blast and later on Firewall and the Ranger Skill Explosive Arrows!
