Save, jump down and then summon the creature. If it doesn't work out, you just saved, so can reload and then re-think the strategy.
It may be better to have a strategy, but as long as you have a recent save, a 'no guts, no glory' attitude often works out, as well. Plus, that keeps things interesting.
