If you are just leaving the starting section of Broken Valley, you are probably about level 6. The quest to find out what happened to the necromancer's creatures can probably be solved at level 10 if you know where to go and avoid most of the higher level opponents on the way there (I did that quest while wandering around exploring, shortly after reaching level 13).
