Try all 3 classes in the training area, and see which one you prefer. You can easily adjust your playstyle, stats and skills as you play. From the first time you get stat or skill points (both are available from books and mindreading, as well as leveling), you can learn whatever skills you meet the level requirements for, and apply stat points however you wish. If you keep strength, dexterity and intelligence at least moderate, to boost the respective resistances, etc (or keep a few stat points in reserve), then switching character types shouldn't be terribly difficult, though of course that could mean less points in your primary stat(s). An intelligence based warrior could fairly easily switch to being a mage, and vise versa.
There is a skill book in Farglow, if you explore thoroughly.
It is on top of the rocks in the middle of the training area, between the lone mage and the camp site. I used it to learn Lockpick, so I could open the chest by the mage trainer.
So: warrior, mage or archer?I played a strength based duel wielding warrior, that used a bow occasionally (handy in the beginning of the game to draw opponents to you, and get some damage in first). I've heard mages are easier, especially later in the game, but I didn't have any trouble that trying a different area first or upgrading equipment, etc, couldn't take care of.
For the creature (that you will eventually get, about level 12, or so), I started off having him as a warrior, but later found it was much more effective as a ranger, and later switched it to a mage.
You will eventually be able to unlearn all your skills and reinvest the skill points, about half way through the game. The cost for doing so doubles each time, so practically you can only do this at most about 3 or 4 times (once or twice should be plenty, though). Stat points can not be redistributed.
