Maxing out "summon undead," getting the creature that you call with the crystal skull, using charm, temporarily gives you basically four party members including yourself. At low levels, the creature is pretty powerful, so it's not like you're using a pet rabbit (even one with big, sharp, pointy teeth), either. My minions do a lot of the dirty work, though I'm still slicing and dicing enemies more than I'd like.
I'm enjoying this method, and have had hardly any fights where I died a lot (normal difficulty level). Technically my character is more of a Priest than a Mage, though.
Can't wait to be able to summon demons and upgrade the Creature.
