If you don't want to duel wield or use two handed weapons, though, the damage bonus (at least in D2:ED) for sword and shield is about twice as good as the single handed weapon expertise (after the first couple levels), with almost as fast of an attack rate. The armour boost may not be great, but a shield can have other bonuses.
