Thanks again for the help and effort your putting into this.

been fiddling some more with playing the video and found an option on VCL which shows you which codec's your using while trying to play it.
Not sure how usefull this is, but it seems to be trying to play both of them seperately and not together as one whole.

while playing video it gives the following info

Audio Codec : Windows Media Audio Professional (WMAP)
Channels: 2
Sample rate: 4800 Hz
Bits per sample: 24
Bitrate: 384 kb/s

Then when audio starts to play it changes too:

Audio Codec : Windows Media Audio Professional (WMAP)
Channels: Stereo
Sample rate: 4800 Hz
Bits per sample: 32
*note no bitrate either*

Just makes it look like it's the audio which is giving the trouble.

Video is in both the same which is:

Type: Video
Codec: Windows Media Video 9 (WMV3)
Resolution: 1280x720
Frame rate: 29.970000

So maybe it's not the WMV3 codec making this a problem but the WMAP ?

If you have K-Lite installed, then you can find in the tools folder of K-Lite the tool 'GSpot', does it tell you anything useful?

Also, can you try updating your windows media player?

ok found Gspot, it wasn't under the K-Lite tools but under the Media Player codec pack.

For both video and audio the status says: Status is undetermined.

When trying to use the MS A/V button it gives me the following error
Rendering failed. Following error is reported by DirectShow:
0x80040241 :(unknown)

when trying to update windows media player it says it's the latest version.

hmm just thought of something, could it be that the codecs are there but not properly registered in regedit or directshow ?
Wouldn't know how to fix something like this, but that would be a reason why they would show up but not work?

Also not sure if this helps, foun some functions in Gspot which might help or confirm what we've been trying to fix.

Here the important parts of it.
DMO WMAudioV9 WMAPro over S/PDIF DMO {5210F8E4-B0BB-47C3-A8D9-7B2282CC79ED} 0x00000000 ** Codec not registered

DMO WMAudioV9 WMAPro over S/PDIF DMO {5210F8E4-B0BB-47C3-A8D9-7B2282CC79ED} 0x00000000 ** Codec not registered

DMO WMAudioV9 WMAPro over S/PDIF DMO {5210F8E4-B0BB-47C3-A8D9-7B2282CC79ED} 0x00000000 ** Codec not registered

DMO WMAudioV9 WMAPro over S/PDIF DMO {5210F8E4-B0BB-47C3-A8D9-7B2282CC79ED} 0x00000000 ** Codec not registered

There was an option in Gspot which re-registered the filter, but it gave me an error stating no path to driver file found.
It just all sounds like they simply aren't there, or the paths to them aren't known....
God knows I wish I understood more about all this...

If I look up the error code (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms919477.aspx) it says:

'The source filter for this file could not be loaded.'

So again confirmed that we have a missing codec, or perhaps a corrupted one.

You're using Vista right? (At home right now so don't have your dxdiag here)

Then try this one: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/vista_codec_package.htm

*sighs* unfortunately no change.
Maybe it's an idea if I send you a new dxdiag tomorrow. With all the installations we've done..

Can you pm the dxdiag to me? Our offices are closed until monday.

But the problem will be the same, for some reason, the codec does not install on your pc.

Can you play other wmv files?

Another try: there's also a K-Lite Codec Tweak tool in the tools, can you try that out? It can detect broken codecs, and detect broken direct show filters.

If that does not report anything, you can generate text files from your installed filters, that might be interesting too.

You can also disable certain filters, I'd certainly try to disable the ffdshow filter, I had crashes with that one myself in the past.

Hope this helps,
Alex

hmm getting some conflics now between allot of the packages.

Seems like the K-Light, Shark 007 and Media Player sets all don't like one another very much.

So I guess the question I have is which one should I keep ?

I've tried some other wmv files but they don't seem to want to play in media player either.
VLC seems to do fine though on them at it's showing that it's playing the WMAP and WMV3 video formats just fine.

Do you happen to know what that tool is called ?

I'lll PM you the latest dxdiag as well.

P.S.
Don't work too hard, it's already late smile

I find my tool at:

C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\Tools\CodecTweakTool.exe

I have myself only K-Lite installed, and the movies play ok. In my experience, K-Lite with media player classic always played any movie I ever wanted to play, and if it didn't it just meant it was time to update.

Your dxdiag didn't tell me anything new.

And no worries, I don't consider this working smile

Ok,

Seems I've got allot of broken registry keys
Including it seems the ones we need

WMAudio Decoder DMO
WMAPro over S/PDIF DMO
WMAudio Encoder DMO
WMV Screen Decoder DMO
WMVideo8 Encoder DMO
WMVideo Decoder DMO
WMSpeech Decoder DMO
WMVidero9 Encoder DMO
Resampler DMO

It's like when I install K-light, it installs them but for some reason the registry isn't correct and then they get trashed again..

I've noticed one other thing, while installing K-light (installed it multiple times now) it always asks me to turn off Explorer and Mediaplayer. Now I always continued with installation of K-light after closing Explorer since I never had Mediaplayer open. I've now noticed that mediaplayer seems to be running in the background, and even when I close it via task manager it simply starts up right away again. So I can't install K-light with Mediaplyer off...
Might be because it's running in the background K-light can't register the codec's properly and that's why all those errors pop up.

Thwarted again...
I found out that the G15 keyboard was the culprit of having constantly media player running so I disabled that and wmp was not running in the background anymore.
Uninstalled K-light, re-installed K-light same result all those broken keys are still there and when trying to play a file it still comes up with Windows Media Audio 9 Standard (161) is missing....

god help me this is frustrating.....

I believe that, codecs are a messy thing.

What version are you installing of K-Lite? I see reports on google of users that do not run the installer with admin rights and have similar issues.

Tried installing it again with admin, also running the tools in admin... no change...

a question, in your ffdshow video and audio decoder what codec is mentioned when you look at the following ?

I've got the following

Video
WMV3/9 disabled Windows Media Video 9 Simple & Maint...
VC-1 disabled Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Pro...

Audio
WMA 8/9 disabled not WMA9 pro, voice or losless

btw does this one mean it's not those ?
If so then I don't see WMA9 pro in the list anywhere ?

Another thing I just noticed is that everytime I run that tweak tool it wants to remove the same blody registry items again and again, so it seems that for some reason it's not removing them..

Not sure where I can find that info? Is it in the codec tweak tool?

Can you tell me what version of K-Lite you use?

But indeed, the fact that they do not remove is the core of the problem, we have corrupted codecs that don't uninstall, so don't get updated either.

Do you run the codec tweak tool as admin?

yes ran the codec tweak tool as admin the late 2 times

and it's within the codec tweak tool if you go to the settings for audio and video configuration and then under ffdshow video and audio decorder.
