No, you will have gofers that will go fer whatever you ask them to bring back, and you can do that with no limit (although you will need to pay to have their gear increased so they will return uninjured).
Encumbrance is not something I would invest in. Sell the books you have no further interest in, and avoid picking up ingredients that you don't have a purpose for immediately.
