I'm playing 1h+shield atm in hard dificulty and its quite OK. I wouldnt probably use it in a pure "warrior" build, but in a build with a little bit more magic usease its definately viable.
The extra survival you gain from using a shield could be better, but i understand that could give out some balancing issues on the long run.
Honestly, go with what you feel its more fun. THis game is not terribly hard that you simply CANT end the game in some playstyle.
Coming from a major theorycrafter i tell yah, honestly, always go with what seems more fun, because in the end fun>min/max.
