It depends on what your definition of "mage" is.
There are no caster weapons like wands or staves (the closest that you get are maces and warhammers), and you wear armor, not robes. But after the early game, you can play by only casting spells without ever needing to melee. But a battle-mage combination is definitely good in the game.
