After you get the dragon tower, you can send out your gen runner to gather more (virtually unlimited).
I got to about level 35 on the first game.
One of the flying fortresses has 4 statues that you have to guess the ID of, if you guess wrong, all the monsters in the fortress reappear so you can do that about 30-40 times and get another level...
