Hey, noob to posting in here, been using the forums for information and stuff since I started playing Divinity 2 though smile

Love the game, been playing it pretty much constantly since getting it.

Bought both on Steam as a multipack after hearing some recommendations around gamer forums.

Anywho, hi everyone! hehe

Now that my greeting thing is out of the way, my one and only question (So far) is....

What is the best gear set for a mage? I'm using a mace/shield combo just now, mainly because I'm a little bit squishy, what would y'all recommend gear wise?

I think I am doing fine skill wise, well...I will be soon once I can reset my skills and take only what I want!

Anywho, back to gaming for me. horsey

Welcome to the forum, Viruk.

The only pure mage set is available in the last stage of the game. Until then look for weapons that boost magic damage and have magic damage enchantments.

You can mix and match enchantments with weapons. So, if you find a weapon with excellent magic damage and so-so stats, you can disenchant it to learn its enchantment. Then find a weapon with good stats and place the enchantment on the new weapon.

If you need protection, armor and charms for your armor is your best bet. But, the best way to stay alive is to allocate good skills and stat points. In late game I armored myself for looks and not its stats, since my skills and stat points provided the most benefits. If you're playing on a high difficulty setting I would suggest also maxing your armor stats for maximum effectiveness.

You may also consider armor, jewelry, and occasionally even weapons that adds to your skills. If you are playing a mage build, items with +fireball and +magic missile are invaluable early to mid game.

If you like long fights and durability a shield may help. It is also effective in the beginning when you have very few armor slots filled and you either haven't looted any jewelry or armor. However, later on the armor benefit is minimal and you are giving up a substantial amount of damage in exchange. You can boost your spell damage significantly by dual wielding weapons with increased magic damage. Magic damage from both weapons stack and if affected by your dual wield weapons skills. You can also ignore the tooltip for magic damage since it is incorrect when dual wielding.

Finally, the best part of a hybrid action adventure RPG is the ability to put your own skills to work. Staying alive can be as easy as kitting, jumping, and running away. Managing your pulls and using obstacles to block enemy attacks and advances also helps significantly in preserving your hit points.

Thanks for the reply, I have read the manual, I gotta admit Divinity is a pretty difficult game to learn though, the tutorial only teaches the basics and the manual is pretty basic, so still sorta plodding along.

I'm just past getting my Battletower, working on upgrading it and doing a few other quests around Orobas Fjords, never really had much of a problem taking small/medium groups unless they all pounce and smack me around with major melee damage.

Normally they don't get close, but there's a few places where a group of melee critters spawn close.

Does magic damage on weapons add to casted damage? Or is the only way to raise damage with magic by way of raising skills? Guess I'm trying to work on ways to maximise my damage output.

At first, I have been using Magic Blast on the healer/shaman/whatever then spamming Magic Missiles into the group but I am tempted to go Fireball when I respec, just need a little more cash as I'm trying to get my runners geared up fully first.

I think on respec, I'll drop a few points into Evade, should help a little.

As much as I like the game, I think my only real irritation is that...Normally, I'd think of mages as wearing robes, holding a staff and casting spells, mages on this game don't seem very mage-like, more Battlemage and...it seems fine and all, but I reckon in that regard, I'm a bit more of a puritan in RPG terms.

Increase magic damage raises your damage on all spells, and also per shot. So each magic missile and each strike from magic blast gets stronger.

You can use items with +[skill name] to raise the level of your skill up to your cap. For instance, if you have 4/5 magic missiles, an item with +1 Magic Missile will raise your skill level to 5/5. You can check your skills book to see your current skill level including any boosts that will be reflected by orange color text. You can also click on the skill and it will display the current stats of your skills with and without the boost.

Evade is a good skill to keep dodge a few attacks. Another good skill if multiple enemies rush you is firewall. It forms a ring of fire around you the burns enemies with fire DOT.

Yes, the game can be confusing at first since its a hybrid RPG and every hybrid out there uses their own system. The best way I found of play the game is to consider it an action/adventure like Tomb Raider or Prince of Persia with an added bonus of being able to spec out your character and weapons.

Thanks for the advice, think I have...for the most part...got my character working.

Using Fireball/Magic Missile as my main DPS with Firewall if things get a bit crowded.

I am still using the old Hammer/shield combo for now, but I think once I get myself a nice armour set, I'll drop the shield and take up dual wield for that extra DPS.

Just gotta do some reading and see what I want for armour now...what set to use etc.

Oh, another question.

Does anyone know the location of the Aleroth Archmage set in DKS?

I reckon the location changed, it's not in Stone fortress any more.
