Personally I quite like the particle effect: although too much handholding is a bad thing, so is being too obtuse. In some cases I think it can be hard to strike the right balance, but having spent an age searching for things like keys when the particle effect wasn't available (and having to resort to online guides a couple of times), it's a welcome addition from my perspective. Though I do understand that not everybody feels the same way.
