Talking of drivers, in general terms I've found that ATI have made a complete trouser of everything I've tried since 10.4. So I'm sticking with that until they get their act together.
I've found out that the
Catalyst 10.7 hotfix (official ATI release containing drivers for both desktop and mobility chipset) solved my issue.
