I just bought Dragon Knight Saga not long ago, when it was on sale on Steam. The game runs really badly even on the lowest setting and i cant figure out why. My system isnt a monster but its atleast up to the recomended except .1 lower on the CPU. Ive got everything set as low as it will go, and the Timescale enabled. Also disabled the desktop composition like it said to in the tech post. Updated all my drivers and the game still runs really badly. Any suggestions to get it to run better?

Computer Stats:
Windows Vista Home Premium 64 Bit
Pentium Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.5GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT
8 Gigs of RAM

Check your Pc. Clean it, and so on, as usual, and lower the resolution and uncheck the first option in graphics, maybe this helps..

Do you reboot your computer every now and then or just let it go into hibernation all the time?

It should run fine on it. Though I find that sometimes I need to log out of the game and log in when things get choppy, that is after a few hours of game play.

Do other games run fine on your system? If so name a few for comparison.

Ya this is the only game that falters, i dont restart my system all that often but its never been a problem for any other game ive played before. Some games that work fine are Rift Beta which uses the same engine, Mass Effect 1/2, Dragon Age, EQ 2, STO, SWG, DCUO Beta, Global Agenda. Even on the lowest widescreen res the game acts the exact same as it does on the max.

Just wondering, is there any way to get lower resolutions not to leave huge black gaps on both sides of the screen?

Doubt it on the lower resolutions part as that is designed for monitors that are not such widescreens as what I'm guessing yours is.

Have you rebooted and is the game running better after reboot?

I had to reboot a ton to update all the drivers after i installed it. It runs the same after a reboot. the HD has 40g+ free on it too if that means anything.

I think the CPU is a bottleneck here.

According to the Steam requirements, the minimum is only 1.8GHz dual core - so you might not be able to max out the detail, but I'd expect it to run fine on lower settings.

The game uses PhysX, and your NVidia card can do hardware PhysX accelleration. If you haven't tried it, it might be worth experement with the PhysX settings from the NVidia control panel ("Set Multi GPU and PhysX configuration" section) - try forcing it to your graphics card or your CPU.

As for resolution, what kind of monitor do you have? I'm guessing a 16:10 (1680*1050). In that case, the lowest you can drop is to 1440*900 to avoid the black bars, but you might just have to bit-the-bullet and drop lower (maybe even as low as 1024*768) and put up with the black bars.

The game uses the same engine as Fallout 3 and Oblivion - did they run OK on your system, and if so at what resolution? Being the most recent, DKS probably pushes your machine harder than the earlier two games, but it might give you a reference point.

Its a 32 inch TV thats natural at 1920x1080. Ive tried setting PhysX to CPU like it said on here and GPU and dont really see a difference. Oblivion ran fine with most of the settings maxed with 1920x1080 except shadows.

So are you running in 1080P (e.g. full 1920x1080 resolution for your TV)?

If you are, then that explains your problem - you're hardware isn't good enough for the full HD experience. But don't feel bad - it's probably still capable of looking better than the XBox 360 version wink
