The gates on the top floor are closed. How on earth do you manage to close the gates on the first floor. It is IMPOSSIBLE to keep the invaders off the wizard. I have my creature summoned and I have summoned a demon, but I cannot protect the wizard long enough for him to close the gates. I have had the game running for 5 hours and am about to give it up. The only thing I have gotten is 5 levels from all the fighting.

Can someone tell me how to get through this section.

Lol, did not either! :p

Use as many AOEs as you can.

I'd like to close by quoting Bellegar's famous last rhyme:

"Cursed be the mother that bred thee!
The wench must have been a hell-spawned banshee!"

Firewall helps a lot. But that part is hard indeed. Try sacrificing some defense for additional damage.

What level are you now? I tried this quest once in the late twenties, or so, and had trouble killing creatures fast enough, but didn't have any problem in the mid thirties (left this until one of the last things before heading to the Hall of Echoes).

There is no way to leave to get better equipment, etc, to do damage faster (other than reloading a save before starting to do the bottom section, and loosing those 5 levels).
What type of character are you playing? Any free stat or skill points you could use to tweak your build?

In D2:ED I stood a bit in front of Zandalor, with my creature summoned, and used a bow on opponents from the front two rifts (more to draw them towards me than to do damage, since I was playing a warrior with no archery skills), and occasionally had to Rush Attack a memory eater from the back rift.

This echoes my own experience, too. It seems that people do seem to have vastly differing experiences of this part of the game, so either it's rather random or its difficulty is heavily skewed towards one's level.

But in short, my first experience, probably late 20s, was absolutely impossible and I had to give up and sulk for six months. The second time I was just a few levels higher but before I knew it, it was over and I found myself thinking "is that it?"
