Correct, he's at the farm and a cutscene will trigger when you get close enough. You will run into this same thing, possibly, with Richard later. Louis also disappears a few times and it's generally enough to just leave his area and come back. There are several times in the game where someone will leave, so be sure to make a mental note when it happens. Good luck!
