I read that the rewards are better if you leave side quests until later does so is it best just to do the main quests then come back later for the side quests or do you need to do some side quests to be high enough level to do the main quests?

I found that it was best to kill all the enemies you could before doing sidequests. EXP diminishes for enemy kills as you level but not for sidequests. Also, I would delay the main quests as well. Kill all enemies you can before doing quests. Just make sure you do all Broken Valley and Sentinel Island before you beat Laiken because those go away after

You will probably need to do at least some of the side quests before the main quests. You can delay the main quests as much as you wish, despite a couple characters claiming certain things are urgent, and usually it is best to do them last. Like Born2beagator said, in general it is better to mindread first, then clear opponents, then turn in quests. However, it isn't necessary to obtain the maximum possible experience in order to survive. If you start having trouble with the only available areas for combat, then it wouldn't hurt to turn in a few side quests. If you have a bunch of quests open and just want to clear some out, go ahead. Welcome to the forum.

That is true, to an extent, but experience is usually the better choice, IMO. If experience isn't an option, or you get some randomly generated loot anyway, then sometimes a good piece of equipment now would help more than a bunch of better equipment later.
In D2:ED some people also waited until they cleared Broken Valley before opening any locked chests, so the random loot was better, but by then do you really need that much loot?

I just open locked chests as I come to them. The equipment you find in them as you go really helps. Or you could always just sell it

Also, right after you complete Maxos temple, don't go to sentinel island right away. Mind read everyone you want to, because the moment you set foot on the island you meet a character that automatically levels you up and erases any mind read debt. So I would save expensive mind read for just before that
