Wha? I was a level 20-something mage and I had no big problem. Died at first time, but then I came prepared with imp (it's how you call the necromonster, yes?) and demon, and was very easy.
I guess, try to fireball/spell him first. He's the only one who can bring you danger out of this group.
...But he REALLY shouldn't take away 600 hp in one hit. A bug, maybe?
