Thank you Raze that helps a lot. I too have the catacomb axes stashed in Aleroth - in Mardaneus' house where I dropped a teleporter stone until I find a merchant. I just raided General Alix's armoury and there's lots of claymores there; but I want a one-hander on account of the bonuses a shield can carry.

How do those early axes from the catacombs compare to swords and other weapons requiring similar stats?

Can you recommend an early game merchant?
