It's worth persisting in this case: they can transform Oblivion from something that's okay into something that's a tremendous experience. That's not to say you won't like it as is - in spite of the very vocal derision you'll invariably hear from some, most found it was okay, but I would strongly suggest investigating its modding potential. It does have a learning curve but it's worth the effort, and many of the folks in the modding community are very helpful (I'd avoid the official forums, but places like TES Alliance will generally bend over backwards to help).

I'd also extend the "get the PC version" to anything published by Bethesda: New Vegas for example is so riddled with bugs that many quests are impossible to complete without resorting to its command interface to unstick them, but I guess that's beyond the scope of this discussion.
