The man caught in the troll's pit ends up walking the wall at the Broken Valley village. Well, he stands still, on the wall, above the main entrance, but another guard walks his rounds up and down past him, and if you stand there eavesdropping you can hear the story of how awesome you are for rescuing him from the troll pit.
