I'm trying to make my way up the hill to the battle tower but I'm having a problem with the Bandit Captain! I'm a level 16 warrior and can defeat all of the standard bandits without too much difficulty. The captain however constantly restores his health when it's down to half! Am I completely missing something easy? I haven't been levelling up any Mage skills, so I hope the solution isn't magic oriented!

Thanks for any help.

There are no mage spells required to take out the captain, though another couple levels probably wouldn't hurt. You could clear out anything remaining on Sentinel Island and in Broken Valley before continuing (there is one quest/location in each place that you must wait until after you have the battle tower to do).

Do you have any temporary boost potions (strength, if you are using normal weapons, etc)? That may help you do damage faster.

Do you have any spare skill points you could put into your choice of weapon expertise or Bleed, etc?

Do you have your creature summoned to help? In D2:ED I found it was much more helpful with a ranger head than warrior, and best with a mage head.

Do you have the best enchantments available on your weapon(s) and armour that you have the formula and ingredients for?

If you have not been to all the merchants since the last time you leveled, you could go check for equipment upgrades.

You can also head to the fjords to level, from the path in the far south west of Broken Valley. There is a barrier preventing access to the full fjords, but between the mountain path and a couple beaches you should be able to get another level or two (not sure; the enemy placement was changed in DKS). There is also a mine in the starting section, but it may be too much above your level to clear out now.

Thank you for your help, and your warm welcome! I've already noticed how much more friendly this board is than a lot of game message boards I've been to.
I will try all the recommended tips tonight and see if that drags me through! I was originally worried that no matter how strong I was he would always put his health up when it was reduced to 50%.

In D2:ED I leveled in the fjords before going to Sentinel Island, to get the most effect from mindreading the island character, and barely even noticed the bandit trying to heal. Finishing Maxos temple almost brought me to level 16, and I got to 18 in the fjords, so at the start of the island I was level 19, and got another level or two by the time I cleared everything else and started on the battle tower.

BTW, there is a hidden cave on the island...
under the formerly windy peninsula with the grave stone; jump into the water to either side of the grave to get to it.

Would have never known about the cave, thanks! I think the first solution I'm going to attempt is a better sword. Haven't bought a new one for ages and think that could make the world of difference. If I fast travel back to the Broken Valley barracks for example, the Blacksmith there should have higher level items than my last visit?

Thanks again!

If you have not visited the blacksmith since you reached level 16, then he will have new stuff.
The content of a merchant's inventory, mineral veins, unlocked chests, etc are set when you get close enough and run the crosshairs over them. If you save before doing so you can reload repeatedly to try to get something good (with a merchant, their inventory will be reset the next time you level). I wouldn't waste too much time reloading, though, unless (as in this case) you really need to upgrade something, or are at a chest (or quest reward, boss type opponent, etc) that always gives something decent quality (and you want to make sure you get something that suits your character) or at a malachite vein to make sure you get some gems (1 or 2 are relatively easy to get, 3 can be gotten with a bit of patience or luck, and 4 are possible but quite rare).

There is a blacksmith at the top of Lovis' tower, as well (if you didn't get him thinking too existentially). Derk the enchanter may be worth checking, as well as various merchants in the starting town (several in the Black Boar, etc). There is a merchant in the shipwreck camp on the island (at least in D2:ED the hermit at the start didn't have much to trade).

So far I have seen the merchants stock is for sure changed in DKS comparing with Ego Draconis !
I think all is changed in the very good way ! smile I think, because now (DKS) I do lots of more trading than before because playing nightmare and I wish to be sure to find the best equipment (read as: that suits my female hero best!).

Unfortunately ... frown ... Lana is yesterday killed at level 14 ... she R.I.P. (I hope :hihi: )

I had the same problem and followed the advice given above. Went to the fjords and did a bit of fighting to level up also explored the mines which helped due to the fact a lot of the creatures were a couple of levels above me so the exp points were good.By the time I went back to the Island I was level 20 and had got the heal spell and the summon demon spell.I also found the quick save very useful as well when I thought I had done some good amount of damage I would then save it.

Without knowing your character build, I don't know if this would apply to you, but one trick I found useful with some of the enemies who heal when their health gets low is to use weak attacks/spells on short timers to whittle down the health slowly until just before they would start to heal themselves, then nuke them with the hardest hitting, long cooldown timer spells/attacks I had to try to quickly zero them out before they could heal.

That is, instead of say, opening with a fireball (in my case, I was playing a mage) which might take them down low enough that they start healing without getting killed, and basically 'wasting' the fireball, I'd just hit on them with magic missle until they were at like 50% or 40% of their health them slam them with the fireball-firewall one-two-punch, which usually would knock them dead in like 2 seconds, much faster than they could heal.

Doesn't always work, but works pretty frequently. Doesn't work quite as well on 'bosses' who might have just huge amount of hitpoints or large resistence.

Someone said that the warrior creature didn't work as well for them as ranger or mage. I was playing a mage, and I found the warrior creature to be useful sometimes, because my critter had the 'fatality' skill. There were times when I couldn't kill an enemy because of healing, but I could get them low enough that my critter would finish them with fatality. I'm not sure that applies with the pre-battle tower creature though, but at higher levels (like the Level 10 head), the fatality skill becomes quite handy.
