The starting weapon for a mage is a mace, but you can easily switch to a different melee weapon (preferably doing magical based damage, to take advantage of your boosts to intelligence) or a bow. Until you get Magic Missile or Fireball up a couple levels you may do more damage with weapons than magic (I haven't played a mage).
