Are you playing D2:ED or DKS? there may be some slight differs in them. Although the KB can be killed.
It takes a total of 20 rabbit kills to trigger. try jumping on a rock or ledge and take him out w/ ranged weapon or magic. Jumping in the water also keeps him at bay.
