i am level 34 and getting ready to go into the hall of echoes. i have refrained from much mind reading during the game because i've wanted to level up as much as possible. (don't want to give up xp points for any reason) i could have have had alot more skill points thru mind reading but be at a lower level?? is this true? which does more damage? more skill and lower level or less and higher level?? anyone? thanks for your time and replies!

Mindreading will not significantly impair your ability to level. I've mindread pretty much everyone in DKS, and will still be level 37 before heading to the Hall of Echoes.

The experience cost for a mindread that gives a skill or stat point is a fairly small fraction of the experience needed to reach a new level, so is always worth it, IMO. In D2:ED I reloaded so I didn't waste experience on useless mindreads, but since useless mindreads are generally cheap and those that just give loot are not too expensive, it really doesn't matter much in the end. In D2:ED I went to the Hall of Echoes at level 36.5 without doing too much to try to get to a high level. In DKS I did everything I could to maximize experience (without learning Wisdom or avoiding mindreading) and still am not going to get much past level 37. Even then, part of the difference is due to balancing changes made in DKS, rather than what I did.

You get more experience from opponents at a lower level, so part of the mindread experience debt is compensated for by getting a little extra experience from opponents, compared to what you would have if you leveled sooner.

In the FoV section of the game mindreading is required for a lot more quests, and gives lots of skill points in return, so you should fairly easily be able to max the Mindread skill. Also, there are caves with respawning opponents, so there is a steady (if potentially boring) supply of experience.

thank you "raze" this is my first time through the game and i have missed stuff and bungled quests for example, when i came to orabus fjiords i took the level 22 ring from laura and it wasn't a pretty scene and as a consequense she left and i couldn't finish the grave robber quest. there is nothing left to do and i am at level 34. you went to the hall of echoes at 36 and having mindread everyone! live and learn and i very much thank you for your insight. - - can i get to the end of the game going in at level 34??
i want to kick myself but the game has been to fun. i've played all the morrowinds and the witcher, dragon age but this is the best!

A new character at the beginning of FoV would be level 35, so you shouldn't have any problem being level 34. With D2:ED a few people finished in the low thirties (and a couple in the high twenties), though with difficulty, as the combat in D2:ED was more strongly level based. I don't know if anyone continued with those same characters in FoV, though (assuming they were playing the PC version of D2:ED and had that option).

Which ring are you talking about? If you mean the one two women find on the beach, then that shouldn't have any effect on the grave robber quest. Laura is near a camp high above the beach, across from the grand knight teleporter shrine.
Other than the experience for completing the quest, there is not much in the Lost Tomb, aside from a treasure chest with random loot and a couple malachite veins.
