That's the charm of the game. Killing random people like a loony can have consequences that are dire, nowadays, some RP games (Oblivion springs to mind) don't punish you enough when you commit a crime.

You best finish DKS before you get DD then, both are long games with plenty of content, once I'm done with DD, I'm getting Beyond Divinity which is yet another Divinity game.
Then if all goes well, we will be getting another TWO NEW Divinity games next year.
