I think you need 20 rabbit kills to trigger the killer bunny in D2:ED and DKS. There is a book by Robin you can find listing his kills, mentioning he has killed 19, and saw no sign of the rumored killer bunny.
I didn't notice significantly fewer rabbits around Broken Valley in DKS. Boar and ducks were removed and there were a lot fewer chickens, though.
