See, that's the problem with setting the game in a quasi-medieval past. Marriage was the quickest, easiest way to forge alliances and expand territory. For a game about conquering territory, possibly by forging alliances, set in a quasi-medieval past (with slightly more advanced technology, admittedly), marriage becomes nearly inescapable.
Fortunately, in such an era marriage and romance rarely have to go together.
