Yes, the wikipedia article is correct.
The original USA and Jap versions of the PS3 had the acutal EE + GS chip on board so they could play approx 85% of PS2 games. The first UK versions (don't know about rest of europe) omited this chip and instead emulated the PS2 in software which brought the number of PS2 games playable on the PS3 to around 50%. After that Sony dropped the software emulation and all newer PS3's cannot play PS2 games at all. As for future PS3's being able to play PS2 games I don't know.
I have an original PS3 (I pre ordered it) and it does play Drakan but there are frequent system lock ups and the levers / door switches etc don't work rendering the game unplayable. I know someone in the USA and their original PS3 plays the game fine but the original USA version actually has the PS2 chip in it. UK version does not.
Divine Avenger - all PS3's can play original PS (PS1) games as the original PS1 CPU is used in the PS3 as the sound processor. When running a PS title the entire game runs on the sound CPU.
The UK was short of PS3's as a cargo ship containing several thousand of them from the factory in Japan sunk in the English channel. That was a long time ago, Ill see if I cam find the news article. If it's true.
